Our Vision

We’ve heard from people in Nanaimo that, especially since the Nanaimo Daily News closed, there is a need for more local reporting. We’re ready to make The Discourse Nanaimo permanent — if you want us to.

If we reach our goal of 5,000 sign-ups, we will:

  • Officially establish The Discourse Nanaimo
  • Hire local journalists to investigate stories that matter to you
  • Create a weekly Nanaimo news and events newsletter
  • Organize "virtual newsroom" listening events that bring people together to discuss local media

Our plan is to provide meaningful public service journalism in Nanaimo. If you want to see this happen, tell us by signing up before December 4.

Who we are

The Discourse was founded by a small group of female journalists determined to fill the gaps left behind local media closures by focusing on in-depth, independent and digital journalism. We don't just cover the latest story - we focus on slow journalism that serves a community's needs. We ask you what you want to know and produce stories on the topics that matter to you.

We started serving Vancouver Island by creating The Discourse Cowichan, where we’ve been sharing stories and delivering email newsletters for nearly three years. After hearing people wanted similar reporting for Nanaimo, we provided pop-up coverage in Nanaimo focused on transportation and homelessness ahead of the provincial election. Now, we’re ready to officially establish The Discourse Nanaimo.

The Discourse Cowichan is funded by reader support and community partners, so we are accountable to the community. We don’t publish our work behind a paywall or rely on traditional advertising. We want to bring this new model of journalism to Nanaimo. Still have questions? Read our FAQ.
